Technical Architecture and Systems Consulting...

Major industry changes often drive organizations to rethink their applications. Structural changes dictate the need for new applications, new integration frameworks tying together multiple internal systems, or new B2B links with business partners.

Thinksol’s Technical Architecture and Systems Consulting (TASC) service provides the in-depth expertise needed for major new application initiatives. We have developed a methodology that focuses on rapidly identifying the key parameters that shape a project, and using this blueprint to generate the final system architecture. Our services are unique because of our pragmatic approach that delivers quick results, in weeks or months, rather than years. We can help your project teams dramatically cut lead times for major business-critical technology initiatives.

One of the most critical phases of any major application development project is the technical architecture. At this stage, requirements from all stakeholders must be aligned with business goals, functional specifications must be developed, and the infrastructure specified, based on anticipated usage patterns.

All too often, these exercises stretch from months to years. Lacking effective methodology, design teams often get bogged down because they are unable to identify the most critical factors that shape a project.

Methodology

Thinksol’s TASC practice has developed an innovative methodology that dramatically streamlines architectural planning of complex systems. We first focus on functional design, which provides a broad blueprint specifying the scope and capabilities of the proposed application. The initial step involves gathering requirements from key players, including:

  • Stakeholders, who have the strategic vision. They specify the business goals, the role that the application is to play in meeting those goals, and the business processes that are to be covered by the application.

  • Key end users, who execute the business processes on a day-to-day basis. Their insight provides critical input for making the application usable and effective.
Once the purpose and capabilities of the system are established, we proceed to detailed system design. Here, we analyze how the application will impact your existing infrastructure, and specify requirements for new additions to generate the technology blueprint. That includes probing the following areas:
  • Platform preferences: Must the new project meet enterprise architecture standards already in place, regarding operating systems, application environments, and databases? Must the new application integrate or interface with existing systems?

  • Usage: Who will use the application? What are the likely usage patterns?

  • Back-end Infrastructure: What are the likely transaction loads? How should server, storage, and network capacity be sized or expanded? How should utilization be managed to make the best use of back-end infrastructure? What types of client machines or devices be used for access, and will the system require upgrades or new purchases of end user equipment?

  • Front-end Infrastructure: Must client side machines or access devices be upgraded, or must new client systems or devices be purchased?

  • Supporting technologies: Will new or additional tools or other peripheral technologies also be required?
